Adventures in Greece Part 2

It’s been a long time between part 1 and part 2 – soz bout that, I have been crazy busy with a project that will be delivered in the next quarter – but enough about work, let’s get back to the holiday!

We boarded a very lovely ferry in Athens, it was only 7.30am and it was already in the late 20’s and toasty.  To toasty to be lugging around a backpack that is for sure.  I had booked ahead and since this was going to be one of the longer ferry rides that we were in for, I booked us aeroplane seats.  Which were like massive lazy boys.  There were plugs for our phones/cameras/laptops and plenty of leg room, that was taken up by our backpacks.  The ferry was huge, there were trucks and cars being loaded on and there were people everywhere.

The ride was great, we slept, I painted my nails, much to Alex’s upset and Tahnee and I made friends with the wee Greek man sitting next to us.  We offered him a sour snake, and unfortunately all three of us started choking on them as they were very sour.  He was very sweet and told us a bit about Naxos.

The door
Naxos is a small island, not a party island like the others, which we had chosen for that reason.  We wanted to relax.  When we got off the ferry we found a bed and breakfast to stay in off the docks.  The owner took a liking to me and throughout our stay kept patting my arm and grabbing my cheek.  We had the top floor to ourselves and had a deck off each room.

Me and the bottle!
We headed out for a walk along the beach and around the town.  It was a beautiful afternoon and the water looked amazing.  We headed back to our hotel to chill out, play cards and drink a lot of vodka.  A whole bottle in fact.  I was well tipsy by the end of that.  We decided that night to head out to the outdoor cinema and see the Lone Ranger.  The cinema was great.  We were all rather tipsy when we got there, so ate gyros and drank some more Amstel.  The movie was hilarious.  To me this was a perfect night, drunk, a good movie, balmy weather and great friends.  When we got back to the hotel, we played some more cards and relaxed.

Delicious fresh squid
The next day dawned perfect and clear.  As every day in a Greek summer apparently does.  We headed into the old town.  It was beautiful and quaint – the cobbled streets were narrow and high walled and the view from the top of the citadel was stunning.  We could see the other nearby islands and had a great view of the door.  After we had a delicious lunch on the waterfront – of fresh seafood and more Amstel, it was time for a swim.  The water was so clear that we could see fish swimming around our legs.  It was incredibly refreshing and it was so hot that we dried out on the beach for about a half hour afterwards.

Shopping in the old town

That night we headed out to watch the sunset at the door.  This door is all that is left of an ancient temple.  The door is just beautiful and the temple must have been very imposing in its day.  It’s a tourist must do, so we had to fight for the money shot of the sun setting through the door, but it was worth it.  We then headed into town for a delicious dinner and drinking.  The ferry the next day was at a very civilised time so there was no need to get up to early.
